Heritage Elementary School is a Leader in Me School. At HES we encourage our students to be the best they can be by teaching them 20th century leadership and life skills. The Leader in Me is our foundation built on “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”. Students become empowered by taking on Leadership Roles in the classroom and throughout the school. Using the 7 habits at school, home, and in the community our students are using real world skills, like critical thinking, goal setting, listening and speaking, self-directed learning, collaboration, and creating presentations; every day to be young leaders who are empathetic problem solvers.
The 7 Habits
Habit 1: Be proactive and make a wise choice (You are in charge of your attitude actions, and moods.) Always try to react proactively instead of reactively. We choose to do what's right even if no one is looking!
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind (Personal vision or goals) Our goal in 1st grade is to work hard to prepare for 2nd grade and be the best students we can be for our school.
Habit 3: Put 1st things 1st (Always do the important things first) Ex: In the class, we work 1st and play later.
Habit 4: Think Win Win (How can all people benefit or be happy) We use the Talking Stick in the classroom to have discussions or work out problems or disagreements.
Habit 5: Seek first to understand, then be understood (Understanding) The Talking Stick is also used here to reach understanding instead of fighting or getting mad.
Habit 6: Synergize (Creative Cooperation) We use this in the class when we have to work together. Example: Cleaning the classroom, walking in line, etc.
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw (Taking care of oneself so that we can do all of the things above) Ex: Physically and emotionally through exercise, quiet time, sleep, etc
